In a recent video, I introduced my new spin bike, but I also ended up buying a new road bike fluid trainer for my wife Thuong to use to be able to ride alongside me. It’s a no-brand cheapo black friday deal trainer, so we weren’t sure what to expect, but it seems to do the job and isn’t too loud as long as she’s not going all out, so the sound shouldn’t be a problem in our Japanese apartment.

What do you guys think about our new living room / cycling room? As Thuong said, my dream finally came true, and now we are able to cycle together husband and wife in the evening after work while watching anime/movies. Doesn’t get much better than that?

We’re in the last day of our Kansai road bike bikepacking trip and we’re taking the shinkansen high speed bullet train back to Nagoya. In order to bring your bike on a train in Japan 99% of the time you will need a rinko bag (輪行袋).

They are usually about 3,000~5,000 yen and come in various sizes/colors.

Both of these are large enough to carry a road bike, but you need to take off your front wheel.

Some extra tips
– take off your pedals (though not necessary)
– strap your front wheel to the frame to prevent movement
– if you’re on the shinkansen, there’s plenty of space at the back of each train car.
– For regular trains, aim for the front or back of the train. Peak hour times on crowded lines are not allowed, so be careful to avoid this situation.

We still had some energy and some time to kill, so we decided to check out the nearby 4 story UNIQLO store to see if they had any of the infamous Bianchi shirts that I’ve been seeing my students wearing lately.

I’ve seen multiple of my students wearing these Bianchi road bike shirts lately, and when I asked them about it, most of them said they did not know what Bianchi was, but that they liked the design and they bought it at UNIQLO (a popular clothing store in Japan).

I hadn’t been to a UNIQLO store in months (or maybe even a year or more), so we went in to verify if these shirts existed or not.

We ended up finding 4 different models at this store, but they were all different than the t-shirt I had seen most of my students wearing. All of them were under 1,000 yen ($10 USD), so they’re pretty good deal for a cycling shirt.

Of these 4 designs/colors, which one do you think is best? Celeste (green), black, white, or orange?

We also checked out some of the other t-shirts they had for sale, and they’re currently doing a shounen jump anniversary celebration, so there were a bunch of anime shirts like Dragon Ball and Naruto, so we nerded out a little bit ^^;;

Despite looking at all of the solutions out there currently, including wheel on trainers, smart trainers, direct drive trainers, etc, this was by far the best solution for our situation. Here’s a link to the bike we got here in Japan.

Spin bikes usually range from about $200~$600, and are a bit cheaper in the US compared to US (as is the case with most things unfortunately..) Despite the price changes, I don’t think the quality of the main parts changes that much. One of the main reasons I went with a slightly more expensive model was because of it’s simplicity.. There are no extra unnecessary electronics (since I’m using my pedal power meters to connect to ZWIFT they are not necessary) and also it has a standard road drop handlebar in addition to the regular spin bike style handlebars.

All in all, we are very happy with this purchase. This thing is super quiet and I’ve been able to get some great workouts in before and after work now without having to worry about annoying my neighbors. A great alternative to spending a lot of money on the newer direct drive smart trainers.

To complete the setup for the ultimate indoor cycling cave, I also bought the WAHOO standing desk for easy ZWIFT access and computer work while riding.

Since this is her first time on a MTB, we decided to go to a simple course with mostly grass fields and some two-track trails. Thuong quickly fell in love with mountain biking and seemed eager to go mountain biking again, so that’s some great news! Looks like we’re going to have to buy another bicycle to add to our collection 🙂

Before seeing this bike, I did not know about the Bombtrack brand. Apparently they are a fairly new bike company based out of Germany that specialize in making Steel / touring focused bikes. Needless to say, I quickly became a fan after seeing their Beyond 1 model in full bikepacking mode.

They come in two main sizes, 8 liters and 14 liters. The main difference being with the dry bag itself. We ended up going with the 14 liter option, so we would have more room in case we needed it.

One interesting thing to note about this saddle bag is that it is actually split into two parts. The dry bag (above) and the holster which attaches to the seat post and saddle (below).

Installing the Restrap Saddle Bag

Installation is quite simple. There are two main contact points which are very easy to attach. Two Velcro straps which go around the seat post, and two clips for each side of the saddle railings. Once the harness is attached, you just need to slide in your dry bag. Actually, if you wanted to, you could fit in other bags into the holster as well.

And voila, as you can see our new Restrap saddle bag is looking quite good with my black specialized Allez. I’ve done a few test rides with this saddle bag so far, and it’s been doing an awesome job and it seems to be very durable (can’t forget about waterproof as well!)
